"If you believe it's time to put principles above parties, character above campaign promises, and Common Sense above all -- then I ask you to read this book...."

In any era, great Americans inspire us to reach our full potential. They know with conviction what they believe within themselves. They understand that all actions have consequences. And they find commonsense solutions to the nation's problems.

One such American, Thomas Paine, was an ordinary man who changed the course of history by penning Common Sense, the concise 1776 masterpiece in which, through extraordinarily straightforward and indisputable arguments, he encouraged his fellow citizens to take control of America's future -- and, ultimately, her freedom.

Nearly two and a half centuries later, those very freedoms once again hang in the balance. And now, Glenn Beck revisits Paine's powerful treatise with one purpose: to galvanize Americans to see past government's easy solutions, two-part monopoly, and illogical methods and take back our great country.

"A connect-the-dots manual for the troubled masses." 2009-07-27
By P. Winteregg (New Mexico)
Beck's "Common Sense" is a great read, especially for anyone who finds themselves instinctively believing that the country is on the wrong track, but not quite exactly sure why. From his opening thoughts to the end, Beck does an excellent job of pinpointing the problems currently facing our country, and gives good thought for how we need to fix them. For anyone trying to get a handle on the madness currently swirling around us, this is a must read.

A terrific bonus is the original "Common Sense" by Thomas Paine. As he uses the beautiful prose of days gone by, it is a bit slower read, but this is a path of discovery we all should take. It is truly amazing how much of Paine's observations from more than 200 years ago are still so very contemporary to our own times.

Essentially two books for the price of one--and a very reasonable price at that!

 "Huh?!" 2009-07-27
By E. Taylor (San Francisco, CA)
This book was given to me by a friend (I didn't buy it). OK, I say, I'll give Glenn Beck the benefit of the doubt. After reading the first few pages, it's ... what is this guy talking about??! Just like his TV show, I just cannot make sense of what this idiot is saying! Needless to say, I didn't (couldn't) finish this book. What a waste of time. Pure nonsense.

"Tom Paine is spinning in his grave" 2009-07-27

Tom Paine was a very left wing political activist with a strong sense of social justice. Glen Beck doesn't have an ounce of common sense in him. Beck wouldn't know a socialist from a Presbyterian.

I fail to understand how any person who possesses intelligence

would give a minute's time to this character who is a raving

maniac....in particular, on his tlevision show. He should

truly be banned from both radio and television, as he clearly

incites the madmen of our country to do....I shudder to even

think about! Why, I ask, does our FBI not step in to rein in

these lunatics, who are by far an away, as scary, if not scarier

than terrorists abroad? It baffles the mind!

 "The cannons are blasting" 2009-07-26
By C. Croft (Norfolk, Virginia)
I read Common sense and was delighted at Becks very methodical slow dissemination of the federal government. It is sobering to realize just how expansive and out of control our governemnt is now. At one point in our nations history, states had more rights and actual power than the feds did...the FEDS were subservient to the STATES. Sobering thought indeed. Government can not help but grow, and progressives are usually the real culprit at work. Becks stance is that most of them feel what they are doing is right, but in doing so we are slowly continuting the march towards socialism. He lays out some very basic things that would indeed help this country. The first, and probably easiest to implement, is term limits. No more career politicians.

I think a majority of Americans have become very disillusioned with both political parties, and Beck is all too aware of this. Most conservatives see the lies and vices that their party has, but they figure that Republicans are the lesser of two evils. Becks approach is that both parties will eventually lead to the same place, which is absolute tyranny by the majority or socialism. Seeing todays state of affairs it is hard to call him a liar.

The only reason this review gets 4 stars and not 5 is because there is no real sense of urgency with this book. Which is very unlike Beck if you are familiar with his approach to government.

 "An Important Contribution" 2009-07-26
By S. Peek (Rocky Mountains, USA)
This short volume by Glenn Beck is one that should be read by all Americans.

He does a superb job of outlining the major problems facing our nation today. He is certainly an equal opportunity exposer. The nefarious schemes by both Republicans and Democrats are brought to light. Some of the things that he does very well here are pointing out things that government does that regular citizens with any degree of sense would never do. As he says, 'The laws of common sense do not change according to scale.' We cannot grow the economy out of debt.

The case that Beck makes is extremely sensible and very libertarian. He does not try to justify the foolish actions of either party. Although everyone can see that we are in the midst of a total economic disaster, Barack Obama is not solely responsible for it. George W. Bush started this train down the wrong tracks. Unfortunately, the current president and his cronies in Congress have 'just increased the speed at which our misdirected train is traveling'.

One section of this book that is particularly insightful is Beck's analysis of 'the cancer of progressivism' in both parties and in many other institutions. He also has some very interesting ideas for turning things around. One of them is the imposition of term limits not just on politicians, but also on 'every public servant - including bureaucrats, administrators, judges, and appointees'. Clearly if those who subject us to their inane ideas knew that they would have to live with them in a short period of time, it would be a strong disincentive to destroy freedom and economic sanity.

We have very serious problems that have been created by the political class and need to be fixed. The failure to do so will doom our children and grandchildren to a grim existence. Every American should read this book and share it with others.

Glenn Beck's common sense is a must have for everyone. After reading this I couldnt imagine anyone still going along with the politics as usual that goes on in Washington. This would be a great book for high school kids to read. We have to stop the youth from being brainwashed. Freedom is the only way to go. Thank you Glenn for giving us common sense.

Great book, though very short. Beck reveals almost everything that politicians don't want the American people to know about their policies. A great book if you are a republican or democrat. An especially great book if your an American who cares about this country.

"Nothing More Than A Commercial" 2009-07-25
By Stefanie Outram
This is a thinly veiled commercial for the upcoming series.

The writing isn't bad, but the author makes no attempt to explain anything. I had a hard time believing the main character's screaming fits. If you can get past that, you'll find more questions than answers. Very irritating. I am just glad that I didn't pay for this. I will not be reading the next book in the series.

Loved this book. It was so well written. I actually could not put the book down. I got to the end of it and was shocked not to find answers to the diagnosis plaguing the young women. What did the doctor determine about her mental and physical stability? I found just too many what happens next.My Soul to Lose

"HQN has a teen series" 2009-07-21
By Tracy Karol (Texas)
I never knew Harlequin had a teen series. Maybe it's new. In any case, I found this author's writing to be really good and wasn't disappointed that the book was so short, considering it's a prequel for her series. Plus, the book was free on my Kindle and I read it in one sitting. Even though it was meant for teens, I'll read the sequel myself and recommend it for my daughters. It had me hooked. Hey, a ton of people read Twilight, too!

 "Didn't Give Enough" 2009-07-20

My Soul To Lose would have gotten a better rating from me, if A. the book actually answered some of the general readers' questions, and B. Didn't make the attempt at sucking you in with a cliffhanger. The plot has great potential for the series, and the writing was well done in my opinion. Also, I thought the characters were realistic and down-to-earth. However, I don't think it's worth buying the other books in the series, and I kind of found it irritating that the author left you with no answer, and a cliffhanger that went "Will she ever find out what's happening to her? Find out in ___!" I do suggest reading it, since it's a kindle freebie, but as for the rest of the books in the series, your time is better spent checking them out from a library.

 "Great read!" 2009-07-26
By Leeanne Bergquist (Virginia)
This book was easy to read, hard to put down. No mind-blowing plots, no magical characters that you have to learn the terminology for, just a good story. This book reads like a screenplay, it would make for a great movie thriller. 4 stars instead of 5, because the last couple of pages were a little weak (kind of like Grisham's The Firm.) Enjoy!

 "Good, but not great..." 2009-07-23
By Candy (Austin, TX)
I grabbed this book to read a little bit of fluff. I liked The Firm and I thought this would be similar. The plot is fantastic and I had high hopes for the book. I believe it would make a fun and exciting movie, but in written form it fell a little flat. Too many cliches, too many "this went just right" moments, just too many of a lot of different things. It was an enjoyable read and I did finish it because I wanted to see if what I thought would be the ending really was (it was, you can see it coming a mile away if you've read many thrillers).

Having said that, it's a book worthy of a read when you are between heavier books. Just don't pick apart the few plot holes or the writing style. It could still use a bit of a polish, but I'm glad I read it.
